How do you get rid of those nasty fruit flies this time of year?

They're disgusting ....flying all over the kitchen....lookin' for someplace warm to hang out....it's that time of the year.....THOSE FRUIT FLIES ARE BACK!!!!! How do you get rid of them? Put some cider vinegar with a couple of drops of dish soap in a bowl, add a little water to make bubbles, then cover with plastic wrap. Poke a few holes in the plastic and place on your counter and those babies will go right in there and they can't get out. You can also use molasses, fruit juice of a piece of old fruit to attract these babies. Just cover and poke holes in the plastic wrap and change every few days. They'll be gone in no time!

Who do you call when you find a stray dog?

Good Samaritans are often unsure about who to call when they find a stray dog.

In Cuyahoga County, many towns and cities, such as the City of Cleveland, have their own dog or animal warden. Check your local government listings to find out if your municipality is one of them. If not, the Cuyahoga County Kennel serves all of Cuyahoga County.

Dog wardens enforce vicious dog, stray dog and other dog ordinances, license dogs, and reunite lost dogs with their owners. Ohio law requires that dogs be held a minimum of three days if they’re not wearing any identification, fourteen days if they’re wearing a dog license, or seven days if they’re wearing another form of I.D. They also adopt out dogs that have not been claimed by the end of their holding period. Dog wardens do not take in dogs that owners wish to surrender and do not accept owned or stray cats.

Humane societies, such as the Cleveland Animal Protective League, are private, independent, nonprofit organizations that enforce the animal cruelty and protection laws in the county in which they’re located. In general, they DO NOT receive government funding or tax dollars. Depending on their individual policies, humane societies typically accept owner surrendered pets, stray cats and animals seized during the course of animal cruelty or neglect investigations. Some also take in unclaimed stray dogs after the local dog warden has held the dog for the required period.

The Cleveland APL is among the shelters that are trying to help dog wardens increase their adoption rates and reduce their euthanasia rates. Adoptable dogs from shelters that are running out of space, but are trying not to use euthanasia to make room, are transferred to the Cleveland APL where they stay up for adoption until they find a home. The Cleveland City Kennel and Cuyahoga County Kennel are among those who send dogs to the Cleveland APL for adoption.
In Cuyahoga County, whether you’ve lost a dog or found a dog, check the following website to find some helpful tips and the number of the animal warden in your community: http://www.doglicense.com/counties/cuyahoga/lost/index.htm. If you reside in Cleveland, you can call the Cleveland City Kennel at (216) 664-3069, otherwise contact the Cuyahoga County Kennel at (216) 525-PUPS.

Check out this record purse!

Isn't this purse cool? I met this girl named Anita Gierke at "Woofstock" at Holden Arboretum in September, the benefit for Rescue Village. Her business, Second Chances, takes old record albums and turns them into these unique purses. I get so many complements on my Abby Road purse, I had to put it up on my blog. She doesn't have a website. She said she doesn't even own a computer, but she does have a phone number....440-862-4777. She has a ton of classic albums to choose from and the purses are only $30! I got my girlfriend a Frank Sinatra purse.
Just thought you might like to get this unique holiday gift for someone in your life!

What do you think of this battle for the dog?

Ellen DeGeneres Continues Fight with Dog Adoption Agency from www.people.com....
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 17, 2007 08:35 AM EDT
By Sara Hammel

Ellen DeGeneres isn't giving up her appeal for doggie asylum. On her show set to air Wednesday, the show host, 49, continues her plea, "It's become so insane ... the dog just needs to go to the family." She stays composed as she goes on to say the fight should not be about anything but putting the dog in a loving home. The Mutts and Moms rescue agency, however, is standing its ground – despite receiving death threats after DeGeneres
broke down in tears on Tuesday's show, the Associated Press reports. Vanessa Chekroun and Marina Batkis, who run the agency, believe they are doing what's best for Iggy, says a spokesman for the pair. "[Batkis] doesn't think this is the type of family that should have the dog," said Keith A. Fink, an attorney who does not represent the agency but is acting as a spokesman. "She is adamant that she is not going to be bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world ... They are using their power, position and wealth to try to get what it is they want." But DeGeneres's publicist Kelly Bush says the TV host has the best intentions. "It's very upsetting to hear that someone is getting those kind of calls," Bush told the AP. "Ellen just wants the dog reunited with the family."
A Home for IggyThe dogfight began after DeGeneres and her partner, Portia de Rossi, took home the Brussels Griffon mix on Sept. 20. Things didn't work out between Iggy and the couple's cats, so the TV host gave the dog to her hairdresser. In doing so, DeGeneres violated an agreement with the Mutts and Moms dog rescue agency – by not informing them of the switch-off. When the agency contacted DeGeneres and learned another home was found for Iggy, Mutts and Moms then dispatched a rep and police to the hairdresser's home and removed the pet on Sunday. The women running the Pasadena-based agency say the publicity from DeGeneres's show generated voicemails and e-mails threatening death and arson, along with hordes of media that interfered with their work at the Paws Boutique store, where they handle the volunteer agency, Fink told the AP. He also insists that Iggy's are the only feelings that count in the skirmish: "It's for the protection of the dog."

Aren't there enough homeless animals without causing another one to lose it's home? I've always been involved in animal rescue and have met my share of self righteous animal nuts! These "animal nuts" that took poor Iggy out of this family's home should be taken out of their home to see how they like it!
Here's an email from a WDOK listener...
I understand the clause that the rescue place has. Some people with less scruples would get a dog, decide they did not want it and give it to some shelter or worse. They then have the option of finding a proper home for the puppy. But they also need to be realistic about it and judge it case by case and now that they know the dog is loved and in a happy home this is a non-brainer.......let the dog go home !!!!!!! I watched the show yesterday and she truly loved the dog and since she could not keep it did everything in her power to make the dog happy.
GO ELLEN.......
.Let me know what you think !

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support Rescue Village's "Woofstock" event! It was a beautiful day for the dog lovers of Northeast Ohio! There were dogs of every shape size and color roaming the beautiful Holden Arboretum! This picture was taken by my co-worker Rick Majors. Isn't he a gifted photographer? He's working on setting up a website. Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

LaFamilia Fashion show at Landerhaven for Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital

Duffy was the big hit once again this year at the fashion show for Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital. Kudos to Dixie Lee Davis from Saks Fifth Avenue and the rest of her staff for putting together an awesome show to raise money for this great cause. Thanks to my friends at "Hug a dog" and Dachshund Delights for making his adorable outfits! I obviously couldn't take pictures while we were modeling, but here's a little backstage action before the show. You'll see Tonia Kwiatkowski and her little girl, Madison, the future olympic star!
Below it's Alicia Booth Channel 5, Denise Strzelczyk from WOIO, Kim Wheeler from Channel 3, and Stacy Bell from Fox 8.

Do you see why we call him "Dapper Dan Deely"?

Duffy is tired of waiting!

Have you seen this dog?

Can you believe this is the same girl?

In 1997, Kate Walsh, Dr. Addison Montgomery from "Grey's Anatomy" and now "Private Practice", made her first television appearance on the ABC comedy The Drew Carey Show, playing Nicki Fifer, Carey's overweight girlfriend. "They basically flew me out from New York [to L.A.] for about a five-minute meeting with Drew Carey," she said in 1999. "I took the chance and packed my bag for 30 days and ended up doing 11 episodes." So how much weight did she lose? None, she wore a fat suit for the role on "The Drew Carey Show".

Anyone lost their dog in the Akron area?

Here's the email I got from a listener.....

Back in May, we found a very cute, long auburn haired dog which came wandering into our lives. I took her in to help her, knowing we couldn’t keep her and thinking I could find her a home. She was so charming, I didn’t think it would take long at all. She is a wonderful little dog, 37 lbs., very well trained, happy, active and fun loving, (see attached pictures) good with kids (at least 5 & up) BUT and there is a but, she is not good with cats – at all – and she doesn’t get along well with most other dogs. (although I think she possibly could learn to live with another dog but it would take a little work and maybe a little fighting). She’s not a vicious dog. I have consulted trainers and they tell me she is an alpha female. I need to find her a home where either people have the time and are willing to work with her to get her to accept another dog OR a family where she is an only dog, which would be the easiest. Not for lack of trying, we just haven’t been able to find that right home. If our lives were different, we would keep her ourselves, but without going into detail, you will have to trust me when I say that it just isn’t possible for us at this time. Keeping her as long as I have has stressed me to the point of needing medication (she was literally the straw) and my doctor has even gone so far as to tell me if I can’t find her a home then I should put her to sleep but I can’t do that!

I listed her with a local rescue group a couple months ago but that hasn’t turned up any potential adopters at all. And of course the foster homes don’t want to take her because they can’t manage her with all the other dogs they have.

So my question is, do you have any suggestions for other rescue groups or other ways to get her exposure? I of course, will continue to keep her till we find her a home, regardless. We live in the Akron area, but I will drive wherever. I would do anything to get her a good loving home, even if I had to drive her to Alaska! And by the way, I am starting obedience classes with her this Sunday to try and improve her behavior with other dogs.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Duffy's excellent adventure

I love spur of the moment trips! We recently took a trip down to Amish country to get a breath of fresh air. It was so beautiful and just an hour or so away! Check out this website for some ideas on what's going on this fall ....http://www.oacountry.com/.

Race for the cure 2007

What a glorious day for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure! I started out very early on Sat., Sept. 15th (one month earlier than last year). As I drove downtown in the dark, it was windy and drizzling. It was lucky I thought to wear my long underwear even though it was September. It took place at Malls B & C this year, a much better location I thought. WDOK has long been a supporter of Race for the Cure. My former co-worker, friend and breast cancer survivor, Rena Blumberg, inspired and encouraged me to get involved with this worthwhile cause back in the day when it was held at University Circle. I have been a huge supporter ever since and, as you can see, thousands turned out for this years race/walk. It is absolutely breathtaking the amount of survivors and friends and relatives of survivors who turn out for this event every year. Here's a few photos from the day's event I wanted to share with you. WDOK sponsored the event with our sister station Q104. I'm with my co-worker, my friend, my "G", Jen Tooey. Her mom and dad come to the event every year from the Pittsburgh area to celebrate Mom Lisa's 7 year cancer survival!!!
